Freshly Clipped: Flower Arranging Tips from Oakleaf Flower & Garden

Flowers grow prolifically along the landscape of Half-Mile Farm, and are gathered and arranged to enliven the common areas of the property. Lisa Austin Dailey from Oakleaf Flower & Garden visited Half-Mile Farm recently to show the staff how to make elegantly simple table arrangements with these garden gems. Here are some of Lisa's tips:

Make it fun! When working with freshly cut flowers from your garden, try different approaches, but most importantly, keep it simple and enjoyable. As with most design projects, odd numbers are very pleasing to the eye. Also, mix it up and go with a variety of flower types.

If you aren't satisfied, simply start over. Maybe you like the flower types, but not the way that the grouping flows. In that case, pick up the bunch, hold them together just below the blossoms and then drop them back into the vase to fall naturally.

On the subject of flower height, they can be all similar in height, or some can be taller than others (just not significantly taller so that they look out of place).


As for color, think about the color wheel. You can group warm or cool colors together for a streamlined aesthetic. If you prefer more contrast, think about pairing opposites on the wheel. White can make for a nice accent to other colors in an arrangement.

To give your flowers a longer life, simply hold them together in the vase, dump the old water out and add fresh.
