About David Arms (In David’s Words)
Putting into words what I want my art to accomplish is a difficult task. There are many purposes for my work. Initially, the visual aspect of my work is what attracts the viewer. I do not underestimate the 'visual,' for it alone can soothe, comfort, uplift and even entertain. But beyond the visual lies what I believe is the extremely important role of the piece itself - to inspire, to challenge, to provoke thought and to bring honor to the art's ultimate creator.
For several years now, I have been focusing my artistic attention on thoughts of hope and renewal. In a time of great adversity, these are positive aspects of life that bring light to the darkness. In much of my work I use symbols to express these thoughts - symbols which have been used in art throughout history such as the bird, nest and egg.
In recent years I have witnessed great loss in lives close to me - loss that seemed unimaginable. But hope remained. And it is this hope that I wish to convey to the viewer observing my work. As I process the emotions of situations myself, I am allowed help and healing through the process of my work, and I hope that while others process their emotions, I could, through my work, provide for them images of hope.
The statements of my work are not to tear down and dwell on adversities, but to think, and encourage thought, on what is good, noble and true. But my daughters refresh me continuously and give me a daily reminder of the presence and power of hope.
My work is best known for its trademark use of texture and color, but I hope when it is all said and done it will be remembered as encouraging and uplifting - a ray of hope!
