Old Edwards Inn and Spa adds another Historic Building with the Purchase of Hutchinson House, Built in 1878 by Highlands’ Founder
Nestled just off Main Street amid 3.65 lush acres of indigenous flora, like old-growth Rhododendron and Mountain Laurel, the Hutchinson property features wooded trails, ponds and streams, arbors, a vegetable garden, a berry patch, a croquet lawn, a chicken coop, a pavilion with fireplace, a playground and even a canopy walk which leads to a “bear observatory” in the woods at the back of the property.
Old Edwards’ president Richard Delany says, “The Hutchinson House is an important part of Highlands’ history and—interestingly—was erected the same year as what has now become Old Edwards. The historic character and 2002 upgrades make the Hutchinson House a nice fit with our current offerings, and the close proximity to our hotel will make for a smooth flow operationally. And our guests staying there will have walking access to all the shops and restaurants. We are delighted to be the new stewards of the historic Hutchinson House. And we look forward to making it part of the guest experience at Old Edwards.”
A member of Historic Hotels of America, Old Edwards Inn also began in 1878. The building that now houses Madison’s Restaurant was Highlands’ first boarding house, known as “Central House.” Along with other locations around Old Edwards’ property, this building is now on the National Register of Historic Places. Just three years ago, Old Edwards purchased and completely restored an 1880s farmhouse on South Street called Piermont Cottage—which guests now love for its authentic character and heritage.
Old Edwards will begin hosting small special events at Hutchinson House in the spring of 2013, including intimate weddings and group retreats. It will also be available for girlfriend getaways and family gatherings, as is the case with Old Edwards existing cottages.
